What is Check 21?
Check 21 allows financial institutions to make an electronic copy of each paper check. This copy is called a “substitute check”. On October 28, 2004 financial institutions were required to accept “substitute checks” as the legal equivalent of a paper check. A “substitute check” includes all of the information on your original check, and will contain the following words: "This is a legal copy of your check. You can use it the same way you would use the original check." After a paper check is replaced by a “substitute check” it is eventually taken out of circulation and eventually destroyed. If you need a physical copy of your check, you will be able to obtain a substitute check.
One of the most important things to remember is that the "float" time for your checks will be dramatically reduced. Your checks will clear in hours, not in days. You will need to be sure there is enough money in your account to cover any checks you might write.
